Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that anchors your restoration, keeping it securely in place and giving you a durable, natural-looking tooth replacement solution.

Dental implants involve crowns, bridges, or a set of dentures that attach to your implant. It restores the function of the natural tooth or teeth lost to injury or illness. You once again have the freedom to chew food, speak well, and smile confidently.

At Capitol Premier Dental Group, the team has a periodontist that comes into the office on a routine basis to perform implant procedures. The periodontist places a single implant to implant bridges and implant-supported full dentures.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

You may be a good candidate for dental implant if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Can’t wear dentures or choose not to
  • Have enough bone in your jaw
  • Have healthy gums
  • Are in good overall health

Before you can get a dental implant, you need reasonably healthy gums and a sturdy jawbone. If your jawbone can’t support your implant, you will need a bone graft before proceeding with a dental restoration.

The team at Capitol Premier Dental Group can determine if a dental implant and restoration are right for you during your initial visit.

How does a dental implant procedure work?

If some of your original tooth remains, the team removes it. Then, they fix the implant into your jawbone before closing the incision. For single tooth replacements, you’ll need only one implant. However, for implant-supported dentures, you will need a total of four implants.

You then need to wait about six months for your implant and jawbone to fuse together. Once you fully heal, you can receive your dental restoration.

Your implant is topped by a metal abutment that your restoration sits on. The team places your restoration, bonding it to your implant and abutment. You walk out of the office with brand new teeth that look completely natural.

What are the benefits of getting dental implants?

A dental implant offers several benefits, both structural and cosmetic. These include:

  • Keeping your teeth aligned
  • Maintaining your mouth and jaw structure
  • Preventing lower face collapse
  • Improving your speech
  • Improving your ability to chew
  • Giving you a confident smile
